Chin tipped up, hair falling, head back,
face flat–this is the: throat opening,
heart opening, mouth opening
Mekelburg Babka pose.
Held, in the basement bar at midnight
with my sticky chocolate fingers gripping rips
of soft and twisted dough.
A scientist I know told me humans
are the most unlikely species. Improbable.
What other animal could or would still be here
if it can’t survive on its own. Without an
infrastructure of strangers.
“Sharks and turtles have been around
for hundreds of millions of years,
horseshoe crabs a lot longer,
algae–even longer.”
“We are pretty well destined
to fail. Most species do.”
I nod and rip another bite of babka.
Nod and rip and chew.
