PREGNANT

always hungry and full with a long list
the pile in the basement grows with me
I got high yesterday from buying a stroller
it was such a good deal
sometimes I don’t know myself
it seems so selfish to grow my favorite person
inside me but I am
I’m never alone anymore but
it’s that same feeling that no one really understands me
I guess some things never change
we are literally tearing up the floor
and laying down a new one to prepare ourselves
i wake up early thinking about
what she’s thinking about
I guess this will be my life

WANING

Branches from Kiev. They named their women Rose, their men were Aaron, Nathan, Isaac.
An essay called HOMOPHOBIA written by unknown high school student clipped to drafts  1 - 6 of a letter addressed to the attackers. Psychotherapist reports, 1984-6, also from the attack. The value of the silver in the chest. Outlines of the silver in the chest. The value of the painting “House on Fire”. The artist would have sold it for 11,000 but that was in 1973 and maybe no one cares. Letters of condolences. We are doing well, but so upset by your condition. The value of the rings, the amber necklace, the gold rope. Letter from the insurance company explaining that when jewelry is lost it no longer qualifies as property. A model train. Meticulous scrawl. Toy Story. Aaron Copland. Scam. Tomorrow.

Planning Ahead

I left home by myself.
I went to that fantastical place of sand and waves,
wild pheasants, wheat-colored scorpions, black vultures.
And I finally felt it:
the sun handing out heat,
the ground and my skin both radiating heat.
A self-sustaining circus of sweat and heat.

Then I came home,
back to the damp cold,
back to the layers keeping my skin from the outside world.
Back home in my cold familiar complaining.
But here the weather is mine.
The wolf spiders and porcelain gray moths, mine.
The blue shadows of early dusk, mine.
The soft dancing Douglas Firs,
the fields of grass and mud and goose shit,
the indirect questions and opinions,
all mine.
Every neighborhood a living museum of my life.

What will it feel like to give it up and trade it in?
To call some other place home?

We know this already:
I will follow no man around the world
like an agreeable housewife who says "I'll pick it up" and "don't worry,"
who learns the helpful tricks of generations of women
who had to live their lives for men. No way.
And still I might leave this home
of Douglass Firs and goose shit and memories
with a man. for a man. because of a man.
I say strong and low, "It will be different."
I don't know what it will be like.
It won't be mine.
Maybe I can make it mine.
Maybe it will be warm.

) Between idealism and whatever This is
are most days and most days are forgotten,
most days are beautiful;

I see myself in parentheses.

This morning I woke up late and
intermittently
checked my phone.

I'm glad to have found something there. (

#1

I cheated earlier by posting a little lit candle in a tin but then didn't blow it out quickly enough and burned a circle on my dresser. I was tired and distracted but did not burn the house down, jesus. Nothing ceremonious unless completely felt, I will never learn or maybe will.

New Years Day 2018

The boots I never wore in the city but wear every day here
Slip on easy now, laces no longer stiff with newness
I’ve broken my own heart but I’m healing it
Like that Japanese pottery fixed with gold
And it’s not the first time, I’m getting better
I’m getting greyer: my hair, my clothes
The arc of this planet swinging again around the sun
What’s hard about goodbyes is how well you know what you’re leaving
Even just the knownness makes it precious
I get tired of learning to love a new thing, but I think
Now that is just what living is
So here I am in this place smelling of woodsmoke
Here I am praying to the licorice ferns on the bigleaf maples
And here I am holding your head against my shoulder, rocking you
Counting your eyelashes and watching you eat
What’s hard about hellos is also the miracle of them
I’ve said hello to you every morning for the last 84 days
84 miracles and how many more to come, pouring glitter
Into every crack

I FORGOT

I forgot what it feels like to dance
in tight jeans
in front of a mirror and
what it feels like to drink gin from a
plastic cup
room temperature
extra lime
.
I forgot, too, my next day rituals.
do I take an aspirin right away?
Is it better to keep sleeping
is it better to get up
turns out I have a slow
rise and fall like a slumbering breath turns out
i need kimchi four times
in the day
minimum
.
Mostly I did not
forget, in fact i remembered,
why feeling all oil slick on January first
is the same thing as starting off
Your New Year
with an apology stuck in your throat
.
i forgot
to remember
some things
like how
to exist

Madonna's Crowd Song

Somewhere I'm a man in fitted joggers, somewhere else the elastic has given out.

Madonna's into raves, somehow she missed the first boat, I'm 38 still playing with Ralph Lauren, wondering when and which polo will lose its sleeve. I'm 38 posting selfies and wondering what all my friends, on drugs could be saying about me.

Al's asking how to be more radical, I'm wondering if I can source cheap pet drugs on the dark web.

I'm suddenly having to think about these things - and as far as I didn't want to scrape the marrow out of the bone so far I'm going to do it as I want to,

who needs acid to wonder how far one can go before one can wonder that one can only venture so far before-

Chin tipped up, hair falling

Chin tipped up, hair falling, head back,
face flat–this is the: throat opening,
heart opening, mouth opening
Mekelburg Babka pose.
Held, in the basement bar at midnight
with my sticky chocolate fingers gripping rips
of soft and twisted dough.

A scientist I know told me humans
are the most unlikely species. Improbable.
What other animal could or would still be here
if it can’t survive on its own. Without an
infrastructure of strangers.

“Sharks and turtles have been around
for hundreds of millions of years,
horseshoe crabs a lot longer,
algae–even longer.”

“We are pretty well destined
to fail. Most species do.”

I nod and rip another bite of babka.

Nod and rip and chew.

Positive affirmations

That would be the day.
You should see the day.
This could be the day.
This could be my lucky day.

We could start a garden.
We could be a garden.
I could be a garden.
You could start my garden.

I have been a rose.
You have arisen.
I get a rise out of you.
And off we go.

There have been mornings
I have awoken on a boat
In a fog
Head throbbing

One husband, then two.
I would be a lover.
I could be your lover.
I could love you so good
If you would just
Get out
Of the way.

I used to end every poem
The same way I began it
Light candles over the phone
Cry through windowsills.

Now I dream of a good mortgage
A morning without terror
And I know I’ll never be enough.
I could be enough for you.
I could be enough for me.
That would be the day.

Homehouse

If you don’t want the egg
that’s ok.
Circle back around the loop of
touching surfaces:
blueberry residue left on the table,
mysterious metal tube in the bathroom --
I know you want to touch the sound
of the radiator hissing,
but it’s hot.
This is our home,

which you probably won’t remember.
